Drifting Off

My first animated short film / film festival screening.

The project started out as a “let’s-do-something-cool-before-we-lose-access-to-the-laser-cutter” with my friend Daniel. There was a ton of steps (digitally animating the 24 frames, tracking the drifting motion, testing out laser settings for shading, designing a track and foliage) for what was supposed to be a 4 second stop motion loop but fuck it, why not. Everything said and done, we got everything cut out and put together end of April.

But even with it all ready to film, I struggled to find some sort of overall meaning/theme to tie it all together. Yes we could shoot it from a few angles and do some cool camera moves like with GO, but it felt like the project needed something more as a proper conclusion. So things just sat in my apartment for a few months. Come July, I saw a submission call for MinnAnimate with 2 weeks left before close. It felt stupid and crazy to try and pull it all together in that short period without a storyline yet but somehow we got it done.

It was an awesome festival where a ton of talented animators showed their work. Very grateful for what Adam Loomis and MinnAnimate has put together with this event.
